Mental Wellness Article 2

Posted by Tim Gutierrez on June 26, 2013 at 3:48pm - 0 Comments

As Agricultural people we are dependent on Mother Nature’s good graces.  When that doesn’t come along, we have frustration that we can’t control the weather, constant concern about our crops and livestock, and financial worries.  It’s a vicious cycle:  no rain=no crops; no crop=no cash for family; no rain=no grass; no grass=no feed for livestock; no feed for livestock=no cash for family. It’s been shown that agricultural dollars bounce around a community seven times—that’s seven other businesses and organizations that are also affected.  Continue Reading...

Mental Wellness Intro (Article 1)

Posted by Tim Gutierrez on June 5, 2013 at 3:37pm - 0 Comments

As a native of Southeast Colorado, I am very aware of the stigma regarding getting mental health help for any reason.  I fully understand the term “I’ll kill my own snakes”.  (I’ve done that, too, by the way.)  In other words, I’ll just pick myself up and go on.  We seem to feel that only the weak ask for help; but, as is usually the case, with experience comes some wisdom.  Even though I don’t jump up and down with excitement at the thought of going to my primary care provider for ANY reason, there comes a time when it is just the thing to do.  And when that time comes, I’m sure glad she’s there. Making a Change in Your Health for the Better

Many of us have set the same goal over and over, like quitting smoking or losing that pesky ten pounds, only to lose our motivation and carry on without ever making the change. For people with multiple chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, substance abuse and heart disease, health behavior changes can mean the difference between a satisfying life and a painful, premature death. For young healthy people, setting goals to maintain your health as you age will help ensure that you can enjoy your later years. Continue Reading...

Is depression another part of getting older?

Posted by Tim Gutierrez on November 2, 2012 at 10:59am - 0 Comments

We all get the blues now and then. It's part of life. But there is a big difference between having a bad day and having a bout of depression. According to a Mental Health America survey on attitudes and beliefs about depression, most adults aged 65 and over know little or nothing about depression. When depression strikes, older adults are more likely than any other group to try to "handle it themselves." In fact, only a third of seniors believe that depression is a legitimate health problem, and 58 percent of seniors believe that it is just "normal" for people to get depressed as they grow older.  Read More...
